Four Indian students are visiting Aquitaine during spring and summer 2016.


HARSHINI Krishnagiri holds Master’s degree in Genetic Engineering and Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology. I am presently working in Department of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She has completed 10months of internship at NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Science), Bangalore, where she worked on “Molecular Genetics of Alcohol  Dependence” and 3 months internship at Department of Biochemistry, IISc, Bangalore, India where I worked on “Brain Sex Differentiation: Effect of Estradiol on Fertility”.

Project title : Chemical Cross-linking and Mass Spectrometry to map protein-protein interactions

Summary: Chemical crosslinking combined with mass spectrometry is being gradually accepted in structural proteomics thanks to its ability to map three-dimensional structures of proteins and protein complexes. The identification of residues involved in protein-protein or protein-ligand interactions is a challenge that requires the evaluation of a panel of crosslinkers with various levels of sophistication (different active functions, lengths, isotopic labels, affinity tag, yield of reporter ions in MS/MS).

This evaluation will be done with model systems (oligomeric protein complexes) and used to address issues of biological interest: retroviral integration of HIV-1, toxicity of Ab peptides (Alzheimer’s disease) and maturation of mRNA.

KALINANI Jay is currently pursuing M.Sc in Physics at M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bangalore. Prior to enrolling in M.Sc, he did B.Tech in Mechanical engineering. He was introduced to the study of ultrasonics and its utility in non destructive testing of materials. He had also obtained hands on experience in non-destructive testing methods at TechnoForge Pvt. Ltd, a manufacturing company in Gujarat. He was exposed to the techniques of FEA while doing an internship at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai.

Project title : Modelling ultrasonic scattering by inclusions

Scientific domain : Acoustic wave propagation, ultrasounds, scattering, inclusions

Summary: The scattering of an ultrasonic wave by a distribution of inclusions is a scientific challenge finding many applications, e.g., design of functional structures for beamforming, signal compression or acoustic insulation. To comprehend the physical phenomena related to such problems and optimize the practical applications, it is first compulsory to run numerical simulations based on reliable, fast and efficient models. The purpose of this internship is to progress in the development of analytical solutions for the simulation of scattered fields. Many cases will be investigated from very simple and validation cases, e.g., one circular elastic inclusion in a perfect fluid, to gradually more complex cases, e.g., two or more circular elastic inclusions, then elliptical inclusion(s), first using 2D/3D models. A finite element –based model (Comsol Multiphysics) will be used as systematically as possible to compare with the analytical solutions.

ARVIND Mehra is a 3rd year undergraduate student with Materials Science major at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Within the capacity of an undergraduate student, he has already done a project on “ Reactive sputtered zinc oxide thin films for UV Photodetectors” in summer during May to July, 2014 in the lab of Prof. S. B. Krupanidhi at Materials Research Centre in our institute. In the long run, hehas a strong intention to pursue a career in semiconductor research in a globally acclaimed academic research lab.

Project title : Supercritical synthesis of high quality QDs

Scientific domain : Materials Science and Chemical Engineering

Summary: We have developed a scalable technology using supercritical fluids to prepare high quality zinc blende and würtzite CdSe QDs with narrow size distribution (σ ≤5%), high photoluminescence quantum yields (45<QY<55%) and well-defined crystallinity. Starting from this mastering of QDs processing, we can now go further into the development of more complex materials. The main goal of this project will be to design core-shell QDs with various sizes and morphologies.

DIVAKARA Madhihalli Basavaraju is Junior Research Fellow at the Centre for Emerging Technologies, Jain University. He holds a B.Sc (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) - Tumkur University – and M.Sc (Organic Chemistry) - Bangalore University. As a research student, I am working on the dynamics of peptide, metals and nanoparticle-membrane interactions using various state of the art instruments such as Fluorescence Microscope, HPLC, FTIR and UV-Vis Spectrometer.

Project title : Structure of pathogenic protein assemblies by solid-state NMR

Summary: Self-assembly of proteins into large supramolecular assemblies plays a key role in many biological processes, notably in bacterial virulence and neurodegenerative disease propagation. 3D structures of these assemblies are still rare as they are usually non-cristalline, and therefore often not amenable to Xray diffraction techniques. Our group develops and applies sophisticated solid-state NMR techniques to decipher the atomic structures of insoluble protein assemblies in biology. This project will focus on the structural investigations of pathogenic assemblies, including the production, purification, assembly and atomic characterization by solid-state NMR methods.
