Universities, Institutes and Industries

Aquitaine hosts several universities and colleges, such as Université de Bordeaux, Université Bordeaux-Montaigne and Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA). The Université de Bordeaux is among the top 3 universities in France that have been distinguished by the excellence program “Investissement d’Avenir” in 2011. Bordeaux has also numerous engineering schools (“Grandes Ecoles”), most of them being gathered into the Institut National Polytechnique de Bordeaux (INP), which is member of the INP group in France with Toulouse-INP, Grenoble-INP and Lorraine-INP. Kedge, ESC-Pau and Bordeaux IEP are the counterparts from the business and politics side. About 80 top-level research institutes or platforms are hosted by Universities or INP and labelled at the National (France) level by CNRS (one of the world leading multidisciplinary Research institutions), INSERM (medical research) or INRA (Agriculture). Research Institutes (see below) may then have several trusties both at Aquitaine and France levels.  Aquitaine has several high tech Industries in the aeronautics, space and defence domains: Thales, EADS, Safran, Dassault; in the pharma sector and ICT for health with Sanofi-aventis, BMS-UPSA, Agfa Healthcare, Siemens; in the “Laser road” that gathers 70 SME in the optics and photonics field. The vine and wine Industry is organized around the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB).

Multidisciplinary Sciences

 

There are four interdisciplinary institutes working at the interface between Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The Institute of Chemistry & Biology of Membranes & Nano-objects (CBMN - UMR5248) is multi-disciplinary and operates in Biomimetic and Therapeutic Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry and Biology and Biotechnology. It manages several Technical Platforms (NMR, X-Rays, Electron Microscopy, Mass spectrometry, etc.), some of them being of national dimension.

The Institute for Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (IINS - UMR5297) develops tools to push the boundaries of the study of molecular events underlying the activity of the brain. It manages the Bordeaux Imaging Centre, a platform dedicated to imaging in biology.

The European Institute of Chemistry & Biology (IECB - UMS3033) is an international research team incubator whose mission is to bring together promising scientists in chemistry and biology in an environment to develop interdisciplinary research programmes.

The RNA: natural and artificial regulation laboratory (ARNA - U869) gathers biologists and chemists to works on nucleic acid delivery, nano- & biotechnologies, and RNA structure and interactions with proteins. It also manages a technological transfer unit (Novaptec) that develops aptamers.

At the heart of the world's most prestigious wine producing region, the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences is a multidisciplinary centre of research, higher learning and development for tomorrow's wine industry challenges. The institute also has great education program for winemakers and oenologists around the world.

Life and Health Sciences

 

The Institut de Biochimie et Génétique Cellulaires (IBGC - UMR5095) is dedicated to the study of cellular functions using yeast, fungi, mammalian cells, drosophila and nematode as biological models.

The  Innate components for Immune Response and Differentiation (CIRID - UMR5164) are devlopping studies on human T lymphocyte activation and pluripotency and early steps of differentiation.

Neurosciences:

The Aquitaine Institute for Cognitive and Integrative Neuroscience (INCIA - UMR5287) has for main objectives the study of Motricity, Motivation, and Cognition to understand the mechanisms and development of simple motor functions (such as movement or breathing), or complex phenomena (including memory or addiction) in the Central Nervous System.

The Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases  (IMN - UMR5293) aims at encompassing fundamentalpreclinical and clinical research in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, with the goal of developing therapeutic approaches to neurodegenerative diseases using both vertical and translational approaches.

The Neurocentre Magendie (U862) is a multidisciplinary center dedicated to an integrated study of Neurosciences ranging from neurological and behavioural pathologies to the cellular and molecular mechanisms of  neural activity

The Laboratory of Nutrition and Integrative Neurobiology  (NutrINeurO - UMRA1286) studies the impact of nutrition on brain function and on the development of mood and cognitive disorders.

Cancer-related laboratories:

Scientific research at the Bergonié Cancer Institute (Vinco unit - U916) covers the full spectrum of cancer research, from studies on tumour biology to clinical trials and epidemiology.

The unit Biotherapies for genetic diseases and cancer (INSERM U1035) has a project focused on gene transfer into stem/progenitor cells for cancer pathologies.

The unit Physiopathology of liver cancer (GREF - U1053) develops projetcs on liver cancer.

Cardiac-related insttutes

The Institute of Cardiac Rhythm and Modeling is a university hospital institute (LYRIC - IHU) that gathers world competencies in cardiology, imaging, signal processing and modeling on a single platform to understand the complexity of electrical cardiac diseases.

The unit Cardiovascular adaptation to ischemia (U1034) aims at studying molecular mechanisms that control blood vessel development and function.

Water, Ecology and Agriculture

The Oceanic and Continental Environments and Paleo-environments  institute (EPOC - UMR5808) operates in Geology & Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Ecophysiology & Ecotoxicology of Aquatic Systems and in Physicochemistry & ToxicoChemistry of the Environment. It manages several technical platforms (Analysis of sedimental cores, Isotope Analysis, Physical measurements, Molecular Biology, Biodiversity).

The research program of the Unit for Biodiversity, genes and communities (BIOGECO -  UMRA1202) is directed towards the analysis of mechanisms governing the evolution of diversity at different levels (communities, species, populations, genes). It is part of CIRAD (Agronomic research for development).

The laboratory From Prehistoric to Modern Times (PACEA - UMR5199) operates on Man, his Biological and Cultural Evolution, his behaviors and the relationship between these processes and the physico-biological evolution and climate. It has the French Ministry of Culture and Communication as additional trustie.

The laboratory Behavioural Ecology and Fish Population Biology (ECOBIOP - UMRA1224), located on the Aquapôle INRA site in Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle, is attached to the Department of Forest Ecology, Grassland and Freshwater (EFPA) of INRA. Its research aims at studying the behavior of fish and its role in the functioning and evolution of natural populations.

The laboratory Fruit biology and pathology (BFP - UMRA1332) studies early development and quality traits build-up for fleshy fruits; non-culturable plant pathogens and their interactions with their host plants or vectors; and  adaptaton of fruit trees to climate change.

The unit Ecophysiology and functional genomics of the vine (EGFV - UMRA1287) works in the fields of ecophysiology, genetics and molecular biology of grapevine.

Mathematics and Computing Sciences

 

The Bordeaux Research Laboratory in Information Technology (LaBRI - UMR 5800), is a partner of INRIA, the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation that focuses on computer science and applied mathematics. The LaBRI's missions are of three types: research (pure and applied), technology application and transfer and training. Areas being developed: Combinatorics and Algorithmi, Image and Sound, Formal Methods, Models and Algorithms for Bio-informatics and Data Visualisation, Programming, Networks and Systems, Supports and Algorithms for High, Performance Numerical Applications.

Materials, nanosciences & physical-chemistry

The Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal (CRPP - UPR8641) aims at developing and characterizing complex systems. Areas of interest go from soft matter to advanced materials at the interface of physical chemistry and biology. Specifically six topics are being developed: Functional Materials by Colloidal Engineering, Soft Matter, Molecular Materials and Magnetism, Nanotubes & Graphène, Biobatteries & Biosensors, Soft microsystems.

The Institute for Solid State Chemistry Bordeaux (ICMCB - UPR9048) focuses on three research areas: Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science and Molecular Science. In particular activities in nano-materials and meta-materials are well developed. Research also covers all length scales from atomic clusters over nano-particles to macroscopic bulk ceramics and single crystals. It manages a large platform for characterization of materials (PLACAMAT)

The Institute of Molecular Sciences (ISM - UMR5255) brings together a community of organic chemists and physical chemists interested in molecular structures, and working on their creation, synthesis, characterization, reactivity and analysis in various environments.

the Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques (LCPO - UMR5629) has been focusing on the mechanisms of polymerization and macromolecular engineering. Projects are oriented towards the design of functional high value-added polymers and the study of their macroscopic properties for target applications. Green and biomimetic synthetic approaches together with structure/properties relationships are also developed.

The Institute of Analytical Sciences & Environmental Physico-chemistry & Materials (IPREM - UMR5254) focuses its research on Physical chemistry, Environmental Bioorganic & Analytical chemistry, Polymer physical-chemistry and Envoronment & Microbiology.

The Laboratory Integration from Matter to Systems (IMS - UMR5218) operates in areas covering Science and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Engineering Sciences (SPI). The laboratory develops alternative technologies to silicon-based materials within four main areas: modeling and shaping materials for components and microsystems; integration and reliability analysis of components, circuits and assemblies; identification, control, diagnostics, signal processing and images; complex and heterogeneous engineering in relation with human interactions.

Physics & Lasers

 

The Laboratoire Photonique Numérique et Nanosciences (LP2N - UMR5298) is a Joined Research Unit between Institut d’Optique Graduate School (IOGS), University of Bordeaux and CNRS. It forms one of the elements of the Bordeaux site of the IOGS within the Institut d’Optique d’Aquitaine, where training, research and innovation coexist. Its research concentrates around complex systems integrating optics and computer science.

The Center for Intense Lasers and Applications (CELIA - UMR5107) missions are to pursue high-field laser research, high-energy photon production and their applications, with small-scale lasers, and to study hot and dense laser plasmas from the LULI, Alise, LIL laser facilities and the future LMJ. CELIA is an active member of the European Large Lasers Network LASERLAB-EUROPE.

The Laboratoire Ondes et Matière  d'Aquitaine (LOMA - UMR5798) operates on Physics of condensed matter and Photonics and Materials. It manages a unique platform for Lasers in Europe, COLA.

The Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires at Bordeaux-Gradignan (CENBG - UMR5797) develops a broad range of topics in nuclear physics, particle physics, astroparticle physics as well as applications of subatomic physics to different multidisciplinary fields.

The Laboratory of Astrophysics of Bordeaux (LAB - UMR5804) is an integral part of the  Aquitanian Observatory for the Sciences of the Universe and  is located at Floirac. Its main missions are: research in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics; basic and continuing training; public outreach.

The Centre de droit comparé du travail et de la sécurité sociale (Comptrasec, UMR5114) is a joint Research Unit operated by the University of Bordeaux and CNRS. Its main objective is to foster comparative research in the field of labour law, labour relations, social protection and demography.

The

Academy/Industry joint Laboratories

The Laboratory of Thermodynamics & Energetics of Complex Fluids (LFCR - UMR5150) is a joint unit between University of Pau, CNRS one one part and the oil company Total on the other part. It develops activities on Colloids & Interfaces, Phase Behavior, Geomechanics, Transport properties, and Geological reservoirs.

The Laboratoire des composites thermostrcuturaux (LCTS - UMR5801) is a joint research unit that has academic trusties (CNRS, University of Bordeaux) but also industrial trusties (Snecma Propulsion Solide (SPS) from SAFRAN Group and the CEA). Laboratory's aims focuses on ceramic composite materials for applications in extreme conditions: high temperature under mechanical and thermal stresses, in an oxidizing environment, even under irradiation.

The Laboratory of the Future (LOF - UMR5258) is a joint team between CNRS, Rhodia and University of Bordeaux. It was created with the aim to develop high throughput tools and methodologies adapted to research in chemistry. The use of robotics and micro- or milli-fluidics has allowed us to develop more experiments at a time, with a better quality and reliability, at a much faster speed.

Aquitaine supports high tech Industries in very diverse domains that go from aeronautics/IT, to pharma, or to agroindustry/wine sectors.

Aeronotics, Space and Defence.

Aquitaine welcomes on its territory worldly known companies on aeronautical, space, defense domains, which include Dassault Aviation, Thales, Safran, EADS Astrium, DGA ... A network of very dynamics SMEs complement the sector: Exameca, LauakStelia composites, LISI-aerospace, Potez, MGP Asquini INGELIANCE, Aquitaine Electronics ... All the companies are gatherred into the Aquitaine-Midi-Pyrénées Aerospace Valley competitivenes cluster and make use of the Aerocampus.

Pharma, chemistry, ICT for health

Companies related to health and pharma sectors are also present in Aquitaine: Sanofi-aventis, BMS-UPSA, Agfa Healthcare, Siemens;

Laser-related industries

In conjuction with the Megajoule Laser (LMJ) related to defence issues there are more than 70 SMEs working in the Laser and Optics domains and regrouped in the competitiveness cluster "Laser road".

Agroindustry & wine

Aquitaine may be considered as the "Garden of France" with  ca. 300 agroindustries and many SMEs all along the Garone River. All companies are gathered in the competiveness cluster Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation.

About 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine are produced every year. They range from table wine to some of the most prestigious wines in the world. Bordeaux Wines are red (Medoc, Graves, Saint Emilion/Pomerol, ...), dry white (Graves, Entre deux mers, ...), sweet white (Sauternes, Barsac, ...), rosé and sparkling. There aree about 8,500 producers also called Chateaux. The vine and wine Industry is organized around the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB). Other wineyards, Buzet, Irouleguy, Duras, Bergerac, Madiran, Jurançon, etc. are also found in Aquitaine.

The competitiveness cluster Xylofutur boosts innovation for the French forest-wood-paper industry. It gathers more than 100 entreprises that work on the largest forest in Europe the Landes.
